Albion Park's Brent Kenneth Hazelton fronted Wollongong Local Court on Thursday after admitting he ordered the "leg model, half body sexy doll" because he was attracted to girls despite knowing it was illegal.
Magistrate Susan McGowan sent the 23-year-old man to jail for 12 months from Thursday however he can be released after four months if he pays $1000, known as a recognizance order.
In November he pleaded guilty to intentionally importing a child-like sex doll and importing child abuse material.
Hazelton's defence lawyer Graeme Morrison lodged an appeal following the sentencing proceedings.
The appeal will be considered during a hearing at Wollongong District Court on February 24.
Hazelton was granted conditional bail where he must live at a home in Hay South, he must not enter any international point of departure, not loiter near any childcare facility nor be in the company of a person aged 16 or under.
He must hand over any electronic device if asked by police, must not delete his search history and he is unable to access certain browsers and websites.
Hazelton was arrested on March 4 last year after he ordered the doll on website Ali Express for about $200.
The agreed facts tendered to court said an image alongside the item showed the lower half of a child sex doll part, with white frilled socks on the feet, a black g-string half way down the doll's legs.
On December 4, 2019 Australian Border Force officials intercepted and later examined an air cargo consignment that was addressed to Hazelton, described as "clothing display model".
They found the package contained the lower half of a silicone childlike sex doll.
Hazelton on multiple occasions inquired about his package including contacting Australia Post and the Department of Home Affairs.
On February 22, Hazelton returned to Sydney after visiting South Korea where he was stopped by Australian Border Force officers, who requested his phone.
In a secure folder, officials found 34 images of children in sexualised positions and three animated videos depicting children engaging in sex acts.
During an interview at the airport, Hazelton was asked about the imported sex doll. He said he bought the half doll because it was the cheapest however "didn't think for a second it would be considered childlike", instead believing it resembled an 18-year-old girl.
He later admitted the doll could have resembled a 12-year-old girl.
He told officials he bought it from Ali Express, the "Chinese Amazon" and also purchased clothing to use with the sex doll, telling them he intended to use it for "sex purposes".
Hazelton was allowed to leave the airport but his phone was seized for forensic examination.
In a police interview following his arrest at his home, Hazelton admitted to looking at child abuse material, sometimes of children as young as eight, at least once per week.
He said he knew it was illegal but he was sexually attracted to girls aged 10 to 15 years old.
