Illawarra Women in Business has named 48 individual businesses among the 70 finalists for its 2021 IWIB Business Women's Awards on May 12.
IWIB director Glenda Papac said she was eager for the annual awards to proceed after such a challenging year for all businesses, and one where everybody deserved recognition..
Judging officially started on Thursday with IMB Bank's Terry Widdicombe sharing his story of being a judge since the first awards were held 12 years ago.
There were only two award categories at that time which were for Business Woman of the Year and Young Business Woman of the Year.
"IMB Bank is proud to have been involved with these since 2009," Mr Widdicombe said.
"IMB has sponsored the IWIB Young Business Woman of the Year Award since then and it has been a pleasure to see the young women we've judged go on to being successful business operators."
Mr Widdicombe said the start of judging coincided with International Women's Day activities this week and Illawarra's home grown bank being recognised by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency as an employer of choice for gender equality.
IMB Bank is among many long-term supporters including Business Illawarra, Lancaster Law and Mediation, Access Law Group, Better Business Accounting, Foye Legal, Commonwealth Business Banking, ANZ Business Banking, Chalk Financial Planning and One Agency JD Property Agents.
Mrs Papac said enduing COVID-19 did not stop the applications being outstanding. She said Thursday's gathering at the Sage Hotel signalled the start of the 70 finalists in 10 categories being interviewed. She said there were five more finalists than the pre-COVID number in 2019.
"We have a lot of businesses that haven't entered before who have been doing wonderful things in their businesses. I am looking forward to hearing the way they have handled their businesses during these difficult times and the way they have innovated and turned their business around to survive and excel."
