The parent's sadness soon gives way to feelings of joy and freedom as it finally sinks in, "they're gone for the next six hours"
Let's have a look at some safety measures around our local schools.
School Crossings
School crossing are designed to allow our kids to cross a road safely.

We all know it because we were kids once and used them. We see them every day and drive over them all the time, however do you know what to do when you get to a school crossing during school hours?
The RMS website has the answers which include the following;
School crossings are part-time crossings which operate just before and after school hours, as well as other times such as school excursions and lunch times.
They are highlighted by red flags with the words Children Crossing on them.
When the flags are displayed you must slow down and stop before the stop line if a pedestrian is on or entering the crossing.
You must not proceed until all pedestrians have left the crossing.
You must not stop on or within 20 metres before or 10 metres after a children's crossing.
School Crossing Supervisors
As you approach a pedestrian crossing or children's crossing where a School Crossing Supervisor is displaying a 'STOP Children Crossing' sign, you must slow down and stop.
You may proceed when the School Crossing Supervisor no longer displays the sign in your direction or has indicated it is safe for you to proceed.
Please be aware of the times in which your school zone is enforced.
These limitations are in place to keep everyone safe, for whoever may be coming or going from the school - teachers, Parents and of course the children.
As parents or guardians we are always sure to teach our children the rules of the road, like using the crossing if available and looking before you cross the road.
We have to remember to set safe examples for our little ones by adhering to the traffic laws ourselves.
Most School Zone speed limits decrease to 40 km/hr.
We must also be aware of any zebra crossings near these school and ensure to stop for any students which may be crossing.
The last thing we want our children to remember from the first day of school is that mum or dad got an infringement notice for $365 and lost four demerits points, or even worse someone getting injured because someone was not obeying the road rules.
So let's remember these days for the happy smiles we see from the children as they take the next step on their adventure.
