Ryan Twemlow, a home schooled year 10 student from Berry, took out the top prize in the ‘Senior (Year 9-12) Animation’ category at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image’s ‘Screen It’ awards for his short film The Fox and The Child.
The awards are open to school-aged children 18 and under with entries spanning across film, animation and video games.
The 14-year-old entered two short films into this year’s competition, The Fox and The Child and Lost, as well as assisting with his younger brother James’ entry.
Both of Ryan’s films were selected for the final stages.
The Fox and The Child is a 3D animation which follows the friendship of fox and a curious child who journey through a forest.
Lost is a live action film about a missing brother and a dark underworld, and was included in the ‘Senior (Year 9-12) Live Action’ category.
Ryan created all props and costumes himself and learnt how to use complex editing and animation software for his two films.
He’s previously dabbled in documentaries and other short films, but The Fox and The Child is his first animated film.
“My brother and I started making little films on the iPad, and it just grew as I got older,” Ryan said of his interest in film-making.
“I love the production part, and the editing part. You see it all come together, it’s amazing.”
Ryan cited the Coen brothers and Wes Anderson among his film-making heroes.
He plans to pursue both live action and animated film-making as a career.
