Greenwell Point’s favourite cafe beat takeaway shops across the country to win the Best Fish and Chips title in online travel site Wotif’s 2019 Uniquely Aussie Awards.
The awards recognise Australia’s most loved travel experiences across six iconically Aussie categories, including best sausage roll, best regional Chinese, best fish and chips, best roadside pitstop, best swimming spot and best main street.
Pelican Rocks owner Sam Cardow said it was “amazing” to again be recognised for the cafe’s famous fish and chips.
“It’s what we are about,” he said. “We always want to send out fresh fish and chips and seafood.”
He praised his team for keeping up with the growing demand, and credited them as part of the win.
“It’s pretty much been the same crew for the past six years,” he said. “The Pelican Rocks team are amazing at what they do.”
In 2017 and 2018, Pelican Rocks Cafe was crowned best fish and chip shop in NSW at the inaugural Australian Fish and Chips Awards. Mr Cardow said the continued wins had reeled in visitors from as far as Sydney and Canberra.
“It’s great to get recognised for our hard work, because it is hard work,” he said. “It’s also great for Shoalhaven tourism.”
But the cafe wasn’t the only Aussie favourite hiding in the Shoalhaven.
After a three-week voting period that reinforced just how proud Aussies are of their local haunts, the Famous Berry Donut Van was named best roadside pitstop.
The Princes Highway may have been upgraded, but that hasn’t stopped hungry travellers from making a quick stop at Berry for a hot cinnamon doughnut or two.
Milton’s Heritage Bakery also ranked in the competition, coming in at number 10 in the best sausage roll category.
Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said the awards highlighted regional Australia’s hidden gems, only stumbled upon during a getaway.
“You can’t argue with the people’s choice and we’re thrilled to be able to shine a spotlight on these deserving local businesses and experiences, for all of Australia to enjoy,” he said.
“Wotif remains focused on helping Aussies explore more of their backyard and in announcing the winners of the Uniquely Aussie Awards, we hope to inspire Aussies to discover more of Oz, with tips direct from those who know Australia best – the thousands of holiday-makers around the country.”
