The gallery has more than 3000 works in its collection and is currently valued at $15.5 million.
However, as the works age some need work to be preserved or damage fixed.
"Basically for the friends to collect some money to give to the Wollongong Art Gallery to assist in maintaining and conserving the artwork that's damaged," Mr Samways said.
The Lord Mayor's Art Patron Star program is tax deductable and will assist the preservation of the community cultural asset for future generations.
Individuals and corporate organisations can help and in return will have benefits through the WAG Friends, such as choosing an artwork for exhibition with a label acknowledging the support.
