Owners John and Marion Wallace first opened a video store in the suburb in 1982. They moved to their current location on Lawrence Hargrave Drive in the mid-'80s.
The business has traded under its current name of Leading Edge Video Thirroul since the early '90s.
Mr Wallace said their lease is due, and they didn't want to sign a new five-year lease.
"It just wasn't economical enough to carry on, not in this game," he said.
Mr Wallace believed they were the last remaining standalone video rental shop in the Illawarra.
Mr Wallace said they had placed a 'closing down sale' sign on the front window on Monday.
"I'm pretty sad (to be closing), and we've had some pretty upset people in here today and yesterday," he said.
"A lot of people are dropping in to say they're sorry to see us go."
Mr Wallace said the advent of streaming services has resulted in the majority of video shops nationally closing their doors.
"We were holding alright until Netflix came on the scene, and then it's just gradually dropped off," he said.
"I'd like to thank the people of Thirroul for supporting us for so many years."
Mr Wallace said he was now eyeing retirement.
"I'm 79 - I think it's time I give it away," he laughed.
