David William Seddon weaved an incredulous story to justify his vile actions when interviewed by police, claiming he was a champion for young children and donated money to such causes that he made from writing scripts and making movies.
However, police could find no evidence of Seddon making monetary donations to any charities.
Instead, they found a plethora of disturbing material in his possession including the child abuse material and internet search histories referencing the dark web and a "how-to" guide for disappearing under a fake identity.
Documents tendered to Wollongong Local Court said Seddon's arrest in July 2019 was the culmination of a two-month investigation by Wollongong detectives, borne out of a bizarre conversation Seddon had with a member of the public at a local hotel in late April.
Court documents said Seddon told the person he was having trouble finding a man his own age to have sex with him.
"So that's why I like to have sex with younger boys," he said, then when seeing the person's apparent shock, added "consensual of course, all consensual."
"When young boys see my third leg they get shocked and very aroused by it - all of age of course, 16 and over and consensual," he said.
The person later told police Seddon went on to say he didn't want to hurt kids or go to jail, despite the fact that one might think jail would be a good place for a gay man "because I'd get a lot of sexual activity".
Seddon then gave the person his business card and a CD containing original tracks he'd written including one titled "Don't Play Fair" and another titled "Don't Tell Daddy".
The person reported the conversation to police, who launched an investigation.
Detectives obtained a warrant to inspect Seddon's laptop in early July and discovered it contained "an enormous amount of gay porn" involving both children and adults, as well as extreme examples of child abuse material.
During a subsequent raid of his home, officers found a cache of fake foreign travel and identification documents, including a high quality Philippine passport and driver's licence each bearing Seddon's photograph but containing fictitious personal details.
Police also allegedly located several passport photos showing Seddon wearing various disguises, multiple books on the topic of creating a new identity and emails to a company inquiring about how to use the dark web.
Seddon was charged with possessing child pornography, using a carriage service to access child abuse material and knowingly possessing false foreign travel documents.
He was remanded in custody at the time however released on strict conditional bail in April this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Seddon pleaded guilty to all three charges in court on Thursday.
He will be sentenced in Wollongong District Court at a later date.
