I've never been one to have the sappy sounds of Baby Shark on repeat, nor have I sat my daughter in front of a bunch of colourful skivvies while I make dinner (though The Toilet Song by the Wiggles has been a lifesaver with toilet training).

But I began to feel I was depriving Miss G of something special if I didn't take her to a Wiggles gig, a rite of passage perhaps.

Miss G is age two-and-a-half, and gets her weekly dose of Wiggles content from daycare dance parties - not afraid to let the children partake in a Hot Potato jig. So she already knew quite a lot of their repertoire.

We chose the 10am show to make it home in time for the midday nap, and decided to make a morning of it (as did many other families I discovered) by starting with a babycino and a smoothie at a nearby cafe. We could have gone for a picnic if I'd bothered to make enough snacks.

Arriving at the stadium you still have to go through the drills like at a heavy metal concert where a security bag-checker makes sure you're not bringing in any knives, explosives, alcohol, or hamburgers (thank goodness they didn't pick on Miss G's little snack stash of lentil bits and a vegemite sandwich, or all hell would have broken loose mid-show).

My daughter was rather excited about the prospect of seeing The Wiggles and Dorothy The Dinosaur, and began to sound like a broken record asking where we could find them.

As we wandered around inside trying to kill time (it was still 25 minutes until the show, so an eternity for a toddler) I noticed amply stocked snack bars equipped with the usual hot-dogs and crisps with the added variety of fairy bread and Canadian Club ready for the go at 9.30am (for the parents who thought it all too much).

However, there wasn't much in the way of healthy food, except for banana bread.

I bought a small sparkling water for $4.80, and another 600ml water for $4. I am thankful I'd remembered to pack my daughter's sippy water bottle.

The merchandise stand had lots of variety, though Miss G only wanted one thing - a backpack - a very practical item and not too expensive at $30 so that's what we came home with. They also had Waggs The Dog hats, balloons, skivvies and shirts, plush toys.

I did notice all of the items still had the face of former yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins plastered all over them, even though Tsehay Hawkins had stepped in her place.

In fact I would say about a quarter to a third of all the kids there were super-fans of Emma, dressed in mini-black tutu's with yellow skivvies and head-bands. I really feel for those parents who have had to undergo that difficult conversation of what happened to Emma.

Miss G isn't even a mega-fan and kept asking where she was.

The Wiggles usually come twice a year to the Illawarra, once to the entertainment centre and another at the smaller venue of Anita's Theatre. If your child isn't into crowds and commotion, perhaps try for a smaller show.

Prams are a no-go. If you have a toddler and a tiny-tot, consider wearing a baby-carrier for the infant so you have your hands free to wrangle a restless toddler.

The show went for about 1 hour 20 minutes (no interval), with lights coming up about halfway to allow for toilet breaks or tantruming kids to leave.

They played all the favourites like Wheels on the Bus, Happy if You Know It and even a cover of Tame Impala's Elephant. The finale was their big hit Do The Propeller.

I was worried I would be too overwhelmed in a stadium that can seat 5000, but overall it was a good experience. I highly recommend taking some snacks to appease a hungry beast and head out beforehand to a cafe or picnic or park.

Did Miss G like it?

I'm actually not sure - she got up and danced for half a song, then proceeded to sit there with resting b*** face the whole time and said she didn't like it at the conclusion of the show.

But the whole car-ride home she was babbling about The Wiggles, then told her dad about what a wonderful time she had and broke out into song, so I guess it left a lovely impression after all.

The Wiggles continue their Fruit Salad TV Big Show this April and May with concert dates in Canberra, Perth, Kalgoorlie, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.
